SKP import to Max has the same limitation as SKP import to Unity - you must use an old SU format, e.g. Edges/vertices are imported in Max convention - even hard edges contain only one vertex per point, which is useful for applying some Max operations out of the box. To work around this, never use the same texture map twice, otherwise you'll have some imported to max as "default" textureless material. I think it's some poorly thought out optimization on the side of 3ds Max importer, since plaintext OBJ/MTL files correctly contain all the material data. OBJ export results must be imported to Max in "single mesh" mode and won't contain any materials using the same texture. Otherwise geometry is carried over perfectly.

You should also be aware that a lot of content on 3D Warehouse can not be used commercially. One of the most tempting things about SketchUp for new users is the huge official library of 3d content called "3D Warehouse" - but I can't recommend ever using stuff from there for anything but occasional measurement references, since majority of users uploading content there do not follow any proper modeling practices. It's a bit outdated in places and you can safely ignore the chapter about export to CryEngine (just use right click -> Save As -> Sketchup 8 format to bring your models to Unity), but it will still give you lots of information on avoiding common mistakes with SU.
